Reduction, resource conservation and radical rethinking: from 14 June to 15 October 2025, the German Architecture Museum (DAM) in Frankfurt is showing the exhibition ‘Architecture and Energy’. In collaboration with Werner Sobek, the exhibition addresses one of the most pressing questions of our time: How can architecture be designed responsibly in an age of ecological crisis?

Buildings cause a significant proportion of global CO₂ emissions, whether during construction, operation or demolition. This exhibition showcases 23 completed projects from across Europe that demonstrate how architecture can address this issue. The spectrum ranges from residential buildings to kindergartens, town halls and city districts. Examining materials, energy sources, technology and design, Architecture and Energy highlights the links between emissions, energy requirements and architectural quality.

The BOB Campus in Wuppertal, designed by raumwerk.architekten, showcases innovative conversions of existing buildings and projects that consciously integrate nature into the construction process. The choice of materials is geared towards mass production and efficiency, and the locations range from densely populated urban areas to rural surroundings.

Focus on Buildings, Energy and Emissions.

In addition to the built examples, three university faculties are exploring the future of climate-friendly architecture. Visitors are invited to explore material libraries and test technical solutions, ranging from solar tiles and green roof systems to digital control technologies. A comprehensive catalogue will also be published by Hirmer Verlag in both German and English, featuring contributions from Werner Sobek, Claudia Kemfert, Regine Leibinger, Oliver Geden and others. Guided tours, discussions and an educational programme for all age groups will accompany the exhibition.

The exhibition’s accompanying programme caters for all ages and includes public guided tours, lectures by experts such as Werner Sobek, and interactive workshops for families and children. Complex topics relating to sustainable building are conveyed vividly, and visitors are invited to join in.
