The designers Julia Huhnholz and Friedrich Gerlach, graduates of the Bauhaus University Weimar, were awarded “Best of Best” for their project “The Essence of Biocement” at the one&twenty competition of the German Design Council in Milan. The seating furniture they developed is made entirely of self-produced biocement. This material does not need to be burned and emits less CO2 because it is produced with the help of a bacterium that breaks down urea and produces lime. The raw material for the project was recycled bricks that were no longer needed on the university’s campus. They achieved the curved contours of their piece of furniture using custom-made shells that they 3D printed – in which the biocement compound hardens.

“The Essence of Biocement” and the other 20 winning projects are on display in Milan through April 23. The exhibition was designed by the Danish studio TABLEAU. The competition for young designers is aimed at design students and graduates with innovative and forward-looking work in various categories. In Milan, the German Design Council awards the international young designers prize “one&twenty”, formerly known as “ein&zwanzig”, for outstanding designs by young designers.
