The way children grow up isn’t just shaped by education or the society they are living in, it’s also influenced by the design surrounding them. “Design for Children” at the Bröhan Museum in Berlin highlights this strong connection between childhood and design. Running from 13 October 2024 to 16 February 2025, the exhibition offers a comprehensive look at design objects made especially for children from the 19th century to the present day.
“Design for Children” showcases how design shapes children’s experiences. The exhibition covers a wide range of designs, from reformers like Richard Riemerschmid and Bauhaus pioneers such as Alma Siedhoff-Buscher, to modern works by international design greats like Bruno Munari, Luigi Colani, and Matali Crasset. Around 250 exhibits – including children’s furniture, toys, playground models, and books – demonstrate how design has influenced children’s daily lives throughout history and continues to do so today.
A standout feature of the exhibition is its interactive approach. Children and adults can play, explore, and engage with the exhibits together. The children’s book section, complete with a small library, is a particular highlight. Playful elements invite young visitors to discover, while design enthusiasts can view the world through a child’s eyes.
