Design for the future. An exhibition in Philadelphia

Many discussions are currently being held on how we´ll all be living in the near or distant future. Visions and ideas abound as to how events will unfold. But does the future even exist? The Philadelphia Museum of Art is holding an exhibition on design for the future. It presents a nuanced perspective, assuming that there will be several, and not just one version of times to come. On display from 22 October 2019 to 8 March 2020, Designs for Different Futures shows that our future world can be observed and interpreted in a multitude of ways: catastrophic, positive or utopian. Questions are raised about facets of everyday life – food, medicine, travel and romance. We will have to wait to find out whether concepts and ideas frequently considered controversial remain purely speculative, or whether they prove to be harbingers of real future events.
