With the theme “Transition”, the second edition of Zurich Design Weeks is dedicated to a world in transition. From 31 August to 19 September, studios and shops will open their doors, established brands will present their new products and designers will provide an insight into their work. For three weeks, Switzerland’s largest design festival invites you to visit exhibitions and workshops, join in discussions or take a design tour of the city. A handful of partner events and institutions are an integral part of the Design Weeks: the “Design Biennale Zürich”, the “design tage zürich”, the “Digital Festival”, “HackZürich” and the “Museum für Gestaltung” Zürich. Newcomers as well as established designers and brands will be taking part; the programme is to increase in richness and multidisciplinarity and, according to the organisers, places “design in the context of society, the economy and the environment”. As far as the theme “Transition” is concerned, “small and large transitions” are to be shown – “from analogue to digital, from the individual to society, from disposable goods to the circular economy”. The Design Zentrale in the Museum für Gestaltung at Ausstellungsstraße 60 is once again the information and pivotal point of the design festival. What is new is that the Swiss Design Lounge of the museum will be occupied by the Design Weeks for three weeks: Staged media provide an overview of the diverse, decentralised programme. In addition, there will be workshops and lectures, a science fiction story hour during the Long Night of Zurich Museums and smaller project exhibitions.
The Design Biennale Zurich, taking place for the first time as part of the Zurich Design Weeks, takes up the theme: Press the SHIFT key once, the Biennale announcement says, “and small becomes big. Or more precisely: small becomes SMALL”. The word is still the same, but its shape has changed. Can the shape be changed without touching the meaning, the content? How can shifts succeed that cannot be triggered at the push of a button? With SHIFT, the fourth edition of the Design Biennale Zurich from 1 to 19 September is dedicated to small and large changes. Fifteen installations “thematise SHIFT: upcycling, data design, digital plant and animal worlds, scent staging or virtual reality”.
France Design Week in Paris and the regions
Like every year in September, France Design Week brings together the world of French design at an (inter)national meeting. According to the organisers, the aim of the festival is to promote design and the expertise of designers and to inspire a broad public with design practice. The France Design Week 2023 is divided into two stages: From 7 to 16 September, the “Paris Design Week” events will take place; from 14 to 28 September, there will be events in the regions. The theme this year is “vivant, vivants”, which means “alive, living” or “By the living for the living”.
The 13th edition of Paris Design Week attracts around 450 participants and includes the Paris Design Week Factory, an exhibition for young designers with less than five years’ experience, and the Paris Design Rendezvous, which brings together design industry players such as department stores, galleries, exhibition spaces, schools and museums. In addition to the Opéra-Concorde-Etoile, Marais-Bastille-République and Rive Gauche districts, the Palais Royal-Place des Victoires-Pigalle district is also taking part in Paris Design Week. Afterwards, exhibitions, conferences, design studios and much more can be discovered in the French regions.
