On the way to the ecological, digital and social transformation of the economy and society, design is considered one of the key competences. Accordingly, it is important to support companies, agencies and designers and to promote young talent. The initiative, which was founded in 1995 by the then Senate of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg as “hamburgunddesign”, was continued in 2014 under the name designxport. Since 2018, the location initiative, supported with funds from the Ministry of Culture and Media, has been part of Hamburg Kreativ Gesellschaft. From now on, it will appear with a new claim, a new design and under the new name Design Zentrum Hamburg.

Located in an exhibition and event space of 700 square metres in the middle of Hamburg’s Hafen City, the centre sees itself as a promoter of the industry, a network, an incubator for new ideas and a venue for debates and concrete projects. According to its own information, it is a contact point and hub for over 12,000 designers who live and work in the Hanseatic city. The design industry turns over about three billion euros in the city every year. In terms of the number of companies, the design industry is even the front-runner in the creative industries with around 4,500 companies in the Hanseatic city.

“With a new name, a sophisticated programme, a revised corporate identity and expanded communication channels,” according to the Hanseatic City’s Department of Culture, the Design Zentrum Hamburg “now underlines the city’s commitment to the industry as a relevant location factor.” Dr. Carsten Brosda, Senator for Culture and Media, said: “The relevance of design for Hamburg is considerable – especially for the city’s innovative capacity and as a creative engine at the interface with other industries. Designers are blueprint builders of our world of tomorrow. I am pleased that with the new name ‘Design Zentrum Hamburg’ and under the direction of Frances Uckermann, a new resonance space for current issues and concrete products is being created under the umbrella of Hamburg Kreativ Gesellschaft. This place will make the relevance of design even more visible, locally, nationally and internationally. I am confident that the ‘Design Zentrum Hamburg’ will be a wonderful culmination point for the design scene and Hamburg as a creative business location.”
