In the 1990s, photographers like Ellen von Unwerth, Richard Avedon, Patrick Demarchelier, Herb Ritts and Bruce Weber produced captivating images of ambitious fashion designers’ extravagant creations as worn by supermodels such as Nadja Auermann, Naomi Campbell, Christy Turlington, Cindy Crawford, Claudia Schiffer and Stephanie Seymour. Now, Claudia Schiffer has curated a personal trip back in time to the fashion world of the 90s. Born in Rheinberg in 1970, the supermodel was discovered by the model agent Michel Levaton at the Düsseldorf club “Checker’s” in 1987. Approximately 150 exhibits provide a panoramic view of wide-ranging aspects, players and places which were important to the fashion industry during the 1990s.

Entitled “Captivate! – fashion photography of the 90s”, the exhibition at Düsseldorf’s Museum Kunstpalast provides insights into all sorts of images. It runs until 9 January 2022. In it, the extravagance of Arthur Elgort’s work appears alongside the intimate, direct style of Corinne Day. Ellen von Unwerth’s sense of humour and fun take on sexiness are juxtaposed with the sculptural, perfectly composed photographs of Herb Ritts. Whereas Karl Lagerfeld goes for timeless elegance, Juergen Teller utilises the repertoire of provocation. A wide range of presentation media can also be seen, from perfect photographic prints and billboards to printed magazine pages, Polaroids and even contact forms. The photographs are complemented by videos, music and keepsakes from Schiffer’s personal archive. A richly illustrated catalogue in the style of a coffee table book has been published by Prestel Verlag to accompany the exhibition.
