Since 2016, Johanna Agerman Ross has been curator of 20th century and contemporary furniture and product design at the Victoria & Albert Museum (V&A). Now she is moving to the Design Museum London as chief curator. Agerman Ross, who already worked as a research associate at the Design Museum in 2007 and 2008, will replace the current chief curator Justin McGuirk, who will in future devote himself to the “Future Observatory”, the museum’s research unit focusing on climate change and its consequences. During her time at the V&A, Agerman Ross curated (together with Corinna Gardner) the permanent exhibition “Design 1900 – Now” and the international touring exhibition “Plastics: Remaking Our World” in collaboration with the Vitra Design Museum, the V&A Dundee and the Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology in Lisbon. She also led the new initiative “Make Good: Rethinking Material Futures”, an annual symposium and exhibition focusing on natural and renewable materials in design and architecture. She also volunteers for the Young Women’s Trust, where she helps women who want to take the next step in their careers to formulate CVs and cover letters.
Born in Sweden, she studied fashion promotion at the London College of Fashion and design history at the Royal College of Art. She is also the founder of the quarterly design magazine “Disegno”, which she will continue to chair as director. Previously, she was editor of the architecture and design magazine “Icon”. Johanna Agerman Ross will take up her post at the Design Museum London in September.
