Focus 2022: “Materials and Future Technologies

The fifth edition of materials.cologne, the well-known platform for knowledge exchange, dialogue and networking on the topic of material innovation, will focus this year on future technologies that will greatly change the design, production and use of products:

Dipl.-Designer Thomas Kropp (D3 Systeme, Velbert) will open the conference with an overview: “Digital technologies such as 3D scanning, digital twin, reverse engineering and others in use in industrial design, art, construction and quality management”.

M.Sc. Lisa-Marie Reitmaier, Group Leader Sheet Metal Forming at the Institute of Image Forming at RWTH Aachen University will talk about innovative facades and their manufacturing technologies for freeform building envelopes.

Professor Barbara Milow, Head of Department at the Institute for Aerogel Materials Research at the German Aerospace Center (DLR) in Cologne, will explain the basic principles and potential of aerogels in her lecture. These are highly porous, feather-light and versatile materials.

Dipl. Ing. Architect Claus Fischer and Eckardt Dauck (Chairman of Zero Carbon Designs Ltd, Kigali/Rwanda) will present the development of the “IBS Board”, a wall system made of highly compressed cereal straw, which is already in use for several building projects in several African countries.

The materials.cologne deliberately brings together different industries, professional groups and regions of the world. The materials.cologne 2022 will be held in English. Due to the pandemic, the conference will be held purely digitally and the materials.cologne team is pleased to have the most inspiring location imaginable as the basis for the event with its partner Design Post Köln. materials.cologne and Design Post Köln have been working together successfully since 2021 to jointly develop future topics relating to design, materials and innovation and to promote dialogue with and within the design and furnishing industry.

Already for the 5th time the professional cooperation with the Association of German Industrial Designers (VDID): the moderators Martin Beeh member of the VDID and delegate of the regional group NRW, furthermore Thomas Flaskamp deputy speaker of the regional group.

In order to give as many interested parties as possible the opportunity to be at this year’s materials.cologne, there are reduced-price tickets for early bookers (until 28 February 2022), as well as for members of numerous professional and industry associations. For architects and interior designers from NRW, recognition as a continuing education event has been applied for at the NRW Chamber of Architects.
