Nature as a role model. Two exhibitions

The more clearly we realise how much we human beings disregard nature and exploit it as a resource, the more attention we pay to it. Designers have always used nature as a role model and incorporated it into their design concepts. Today, this approach is adopted even more intensively. Two exhibitions in the USA are currently showing what we can learn from nature in order to achieve a more sustainable way of life. From 22 February to 25 May 2020, the Museum of Modern Art in New York will present the work of designer Neri Oxman, entitled Material Ecology, as well as the findings from her research conducted at the Media Lab of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). In Atlanta the Museum of Design has declared 2020 to be the “Year of Climate + Change”, and it is opening its engagement with this topic with an exhibition entitled Learning from Nature: The Future of Design. From 1 March to 23 May, the exhibition will present the strategies and paradigms that animals and plants have developed to survive with little effort in their natural environments and explain why these are excellent models for man-made products and systems.
