Ornamo Art and Design is the largest community of designers in Finland. The organisation, which was founded in 1911, has issued a manifesto calling on designers and organisations to integrate sustainability and social responsibility into their work.
Since its foundation 110 years ago, Ornamo has been promoting designers, highlighting the social value of design and stimulating sustainable design through a wide range of initiatives and events. The design industry is currently undergoing a fundamental change, with sustainability and social responsibility moving to the forefront. With the Responsible Design Manifesto, Ornamo is sending a clear signal in favour of sustainable design. It calls on designers to consider environmental and social aspects in their creative processes.
The manifesto was drawn up with four main objectives:
- Embedding responsibility and sustainability at the heart of design practice.
- Fostering the engagement and agency of designers who want to make a difference.
- The orientation of design practice through tangible paths.
- And disrupting the status quo in order to drive large-scale change.
The target audience includes designers, multidisciplinary professionals, organisations and their clients, educators, policy makers and anyone else interested in ethical and sustainable design.
The Responsible Design Manifesto was developed in collaboration with members of the Ornamo Responsibility Circle, a group of designers committed to responsibility and sustainability. The launch of the Manifesto took place as part of the ArkMuoto Festival in the foyer of Helsinki City Hall, bringing together experts to discuss sustainable design.
