Jonna Breitenhuber, who graduated from Berlin University of the Arts in 2019 with a master’s in product design, was working as a packaging designer for cosmetic products when she became frustrated by the lack of sustainable containers for liquid personal-care products. She wanted to look for solutions as part of her master’s thesis. Drawing inspiration from the food industry and its examples of products themselves becoming packaging (like the cone of an ice cream cone), she developed the concept of a “Soapbottle”. The idea is deceptively simple: shower gel is supplied in packaging made from soap, and this packaging can then be used as hand soap when the shower gel runs out. The concept was presented at Salone Satellite and various trade fairs and exhibitions, with design and sustainability awards such as the German Federal Ecodesign Award following shortly thereafter. Project Soapbottle is now based in Amsterdam and has grown into a young, international team working on product and brand development and looking for backers on Kickstarter. A functioning prototype has already been developed.
