The Solar Biennale will take place between the spring and autumn equinoxes, from 21 March to 21 September 2025. The mudac in Lausanne is presenting a transdisciplinary programme with works by renowned artists and designers. Ten new projects have been specially commissioned for the Biennale, including works by Common Accounts, ecoLogicStudio and Solar Lab (Juliette Bibasse & Joanie Lemercier). The exhibition is complemented by works from the mudac collection by artists such as Ólafur Elíasson, Liam Young and Andreas Gursky.

In addition to the main exhibition at the Plateform 10 art quarter, the Biennale can also be experienced at the École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL). The exhibitions From Solar to Nocturnal and Halos will present new artistic works created with the support of the EPFL’s scientific community. Another exhibition at the Archizoom centre will show how solar energy is increasingly being integrated into architecture and urban planning.

A special highlight is the collaboration with the publishing house La Volte, which will publish a collection of short stories. These literary visions of the future show how fiction can contribute to imagining sustainable models of society. The Solar Biennial also offers a varied supporting programme, including the Solstice & Music Festival on 21 June and Sobriety Day on 6 September, dedicated to sustainable lifestyles.

In 2022, the world’s first Solar Biennale will take place in the Netherlands, with Rotterdam as the main venue. Dutch designers Pauline van Dongen and Marjan van Aubel founded the initiative to mark a new international movement that advocates a living space where solar energy is at the centre. The Solar Biennale aims to go beyond a purely technical perspective and explore the sun as a cultural, design and social phenomenon.
