From the famous Vespa scooter by Piaggio to the Olivetti typewriter and the Arco floating lamp by Flos, Italian design has been synonymous with elegance, modernity and functionality for decades. But what makes up this unique style? The ARTE documentary Italomodern Design embarks on a fascinating journey of discovery in Milan, where it all began in 1946, and reveals how the fusion of visionary design, artisan precision and an appreciation of everyday aesthetics made “Made in Italy” a global hallmark of quality.

After the war, Milan became a centre of innovation. From the ruins of a war-torn economy, designers created industrial products that were not only functional, but also affordable and aesthetically pleasing. Piaggio’s famous Vespa became the symbol of a new era of mobility – light, dynamic and full of vitality.

Achille Castiglioni, one of the visionaries of this movement, played a pivotal role in shaping the Italian design language with his interdisciplinary approach. His iconic Arco lamp, which appears to float effortlessly in space thanks to a slender steel arch, exemplifies the seamless fusion of art and engineering. Castiglioni’s studio was a creative melting pot where artists, engineers and craftsmen worked together.

Milan remains the epicentre of Italian design. Home to world-famous companies and museums such as the Triennale, the city continues to influence global trends. Figures such as furniture entrepreneur Giulia Molteni and Triennale director Stefano Boeri are keeping the tradition alive and pushing it forward.

The documentary Italomodern, directed by Stefanie Appel, takes viewers into the world of Italian design. It shows how the post-war spirit of renewal gave rise to a distinctive style that continues to resonate in car design, furniture and fashion. Italomodern Design will be shown online on ARTE from 12 January 2025 to 10 July 2025.
