Do the analogue and the digital oppose one another? What design potential is there in cultural differences? How do expectations and reality interact? When does the natural start to become artificial? The Design Biennale Zurich is a design event of a pop-up nature. The third one will be taking place this year from 12 August to 5 September in the Old Botanical Garden at the University of Zurich, where different values, traditions and expectations are to come up against each other under the title of “CLASH”.
Twelve designers from different disciplines have been given carte blanche for the outdoor area. Positions have been given to AATB, absurda*, Annina Arter, Nathalie Borgeaud, Büro Destruct, Laure Gremion, Charles Job, Rafael Kouto, Emma Mc Millin & Oliver Sahli (ZHdK), Ortreport, Stella Speziali & Alexander Wolhoff, and Anna Wohlgemuth & Yanik Kloter. The biennale aims to sharpen the public’s perception of design, particularly in Switzerland. It is intended to stimulate discourse and critical debate, present design-related topics in the tug of war between culture and business, and cement the cultural relevance of design. Furthermore, the audience can look forward to a diverse accompanying programme of tours, designers’ talks and workshops.
