On 5 April 2025, the Disruptive Materials Institute e.V. will open its doors at the KuLe Gallery in Berlin and celebrate with a two-day event. The aim of the non-profit institute is to promote research, innovation, creativity and interdisciplinary collaboration in the field of social and sustainable materials and textiles.

Behind the founding of the Disruptive Materials Institute is an interdisciplinary team of designers, including Juni Sun Neyenhuys, who was named Newcomer of the Year at the German Design Award 2025. The rest of the team consists of textile designer Essi Johanna Glomb, biodesigner and materials researcher Malu Lücking, textile and materials designer Jasmin Martinez, marketing and cooperation strategist Anna Melo and developer of open source tools for decentralised yarn production Sara Diaz Rodriguez.
The Institute sees itself as a platform that brings together science, design, education and culture to develop solutions to the challenges of our time. It focuses on three key areas of research: Biomaterials, Open Source Tools and Innovative Textiles.
An Immersive Opening Event
The opening of the Institute will take place over two days, starting on 5 April with presentations by international experts. This will be followed by drinks and networking opportunities. On 6 April, visitors will be able to try out new materials and methods in workshops.
The exhibition, which will be open on both days, will showcase work that pushes the boundaries of material design and textile production – from algae-based fibres to open-source spinning machines.
