One of Europe’s most important international design events, the Slovenian Design Biennale BIO celebrates its 60th anniversary this year. The current edition explores the language of flowers and focuses on innovative intersections between architecture, industry and science.
Since its beginnings in 1964, the Slovenian ‘Design Biennial BIO‘ has taken a prominent place among Europe’s top international design events. Organised by the Museum of Architecture and Design (MAO) in Ljubljana since 1972, the biennial seeks innovative and development-oriented interfaces between architecture, industry and science. BIO is organised in cooperation with the MAO’s Centre for Creativity, a project co-financed by the Republic of Slovenia and the European Union through the European Regional Development Fund as part of the European Cohesion Policy.
The 28th edition of the Design Biennale (BIO28) will take place from 21 November to 6 April 2025 and will present design approaches that address pressing local and global issues. The Biennale’s curatorial concept, which celebrates its 60-year legacy, was developed by professor and curator Alexandra Midal together with assistant curator Emma Pflieger.
Under the title ‘Double Agent: Do You Speak Flower?’, the central exhibition, as described, “examines the figure of floriography, a code hidden in flowers used to convey secret messages”. The transdisciplinary and multi-layered exhibition focuses on the central role of the language of flowers, often used by women to express their identity: “In this sense, flowers pave the way for antagonistic and alternative interpretations, both of meanings and of the context in which they are deciphered”.
In contrast to conventional design history narratives promoted by modernist adherents, ‘Double Agent’ offers a new perspective on extended design and how these strategies can contribute to the transformation of the discipline. The strategic nature of artifice and the subtlety behind the fragility and beauty of flowers will be explored and highlighted. In addition, the Biennale has adopted sustainability as a guiding principle, taking active steps to reduce its environmental footprint in all its activities and showcasing innovative approaches to sustainable cultural production.
