It goes together: At the Aedes Architekturforum in Berlin, where contemporary Chinese architectural culture was shown early on, there is currently an extensive exhibition by and about Neri&Hu. For their part, the architect duo has made a decisive contribution to the fact that architecture and design from today’s China are now perceived and taken seriously in the rest of the world. Rossana Hu and Lyndon Neri use the term and title of the exhibition Reflective Nostalgia to describe their approach. It obviously ties in on a more emotional level with architectural theories such as “Critical Regionalism” and promotes a reflective approach to the longing for the familiar and the traditional, which – for this the architects in turn quote the theses of the cultural scientist Svetlana Boym on nostalgia – “does not shy away from the contradictions of modernity”.

The exhibition, writes the gallery, was inspired by the warehouse or archive as well as the historical idea of the forum. It shows around 30 projects, both completed and in the planning stage, from the fields of architecture, interior design, product design and graphics. In addition, videos, numerous architectural models of various scales, photographs and a collection of chairs tell of the new building and existing development projects and their connection with Reflective Nostalgia as a philosophy and method. Founded in 2004 by Lyndon Neri and Rossana Hu, Neri&Hu Design and Research Office is an interdisciplinary international architectural practice based in Shanghai with offices in London, Paris and Milan. Their portfolio includes commissions ranging from master planning and architecture to interior design, installation, furniture, products, branding and graphic works. The exhibition at Aedes Architekturforum, Berlin, runs until 30.11.2022.
