Diageo, a global manufacturer and seller of spirits and beers, has founded the company Pulpex Limited together with the venture management company Pilot Lite. This company focuses on the production of innovative and sustainable packaging technologies in the area of fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG). One of the aims is to ensure that the new packaging types can also be used in the food sector without any cause for concern. As the “first of its kind”, a scalable paper-based bottle has been developed which is 100% plastic-free and can be fully recycled in the standard waste streams. To meet food safety standards, the bottle is made from sustainably sourced pulp. According to Pulpex, the technology allows brands to rethink their packaging designs or convert existing designs to paper without adversely affecting product quality. “This bottle has the potential to be truly groundbreaking,” says Ewan Andrew, Chief Sustainability Officer at Diageo PLC. “It feels fitting that we should launch it with Johnnie Walker, a brand that has often led the way in innovation throughout its 200 years existence.”
