Transformation processes need to be designed. The German Ecodesign Award, which has been presented by the German Ministry for the Environment (BMUV) and the German Environment Agency (UBA) in cooperation with the International Design Centre Berlin (IDZ) since 2012, therefore focuses on innovative ideas that are not only convincing in terms of design, but also from an ecological perspective. The award recognises projects that demonstrate outstanding environmental and design quality and make an innovative contribution to sustainable transformation. Until 15 April 2024, companies of all sectors and sizes, designers and students from all over Europe will once again have the opportunity to submit their projects for the German Ecodesign Award 2024. Participation is open to products and services that are already market-ready as well as concepts and student projects.

The competition is organised in four categories: Product, Service, Concept and Young Talent. Entries can be submitted for “products and prototypes that are available on the European market or whose market launch is planned in the foreseeable future, services and system solutions, model projects and conceptual ideas, as well as work created as part of a degree programme”. In addition to design innovations, technical and social innovations are also in demand. The criteria matrix of the Federal Ecodesign Award and the Federal Environment Agency’s Ecodesign Kit serve as a guide during the planning and design phase.

The entries undergo a multi-stage process in which they are assessed by a panel of design and environmental experts from the German Environment Agency and the advisory board as well as an interdisciplinary jury. On 2 December 2024, the winners will then be publicly announced at an award ceremony at the German Environment Ministry. In addition, all nominated and award-winning submissions will be presented in a travelling exhibition for one year, which will be shown at trade fairs, museums and design and environmental festivals throughout Europe.
