How do people and mobility interact? What does mobility mean for people in the city or in the countryside? How can mobility be made more sustainable, individualised and needs-based? What technology plays a role in this today and in the future? The newly founded “Institute for Man and Mobility” (IMM) at Munich University of Applied Sciences is dedicated to these and other questions. According to the university, the cross-faculty institute will conduct application-orientated research into sustainable mobility and the technology of the future. “The term mobility encompasses individual and public transport vehicles, the tools and infrastructure required to provide mobility, mobility planning and their impact on people and society,” says Institute Director Prof Dr Stefan Sentpali. A particular research focus is on the interaction between people and mobility; the IMM’s guiding principle and challenge is: “Life in motion”.
The IMM is an independent scientific institution of the Munich University of Applied Sciences. The institute is administratively supported by an institute council, which includes the founding professors. This group includes the eight HM professors Simon Hecker, Marion Kießling, Alexander Knoll, Daniel Ossmann, Peter Pfeffer, Stefan Sentpali, Michael Wibmer and Othmar Wickenheiser. With the newly founded IMM, HM now has six research institutes of its own. “The IMM ideally complements our previous five research institutes,” explains Prof. Dr Sonja Munz, HM Vice President for Research: “While the first four institutes, with their technical tradition, primarily shed light on engineering issues and SHE:RC, which will be added in 2022, expands our research spectrum to include social transformation, the IMM pursues a holistic view that combines technology, design and people.”
