In 2023, the Triennale celebrated its 100th anniversary. Located in the Palazzo dell’Arte in Milan’s Parco Sempione, the art and cultural centre regularly showcases exhibitions and events on contemporary design, urban planning, architecture, music and media art. In addition to the regular Triennale di Milano, the Palazzo dell’Arte has also been home to the Triennale Design Museum since 2007. The new Triennale research, study and archive centre has now been opened under the name “Cuore” (meaning “heart”). Architect Luca Cipelletti’s AR.CH.IT studio was responsible for the design. A functional and modular concept for the archive was developed in collaboration with Unifor. The design of the archive is based on a flexible, modular system of display cabinets, cupboards and shelves designed for the presentation of various objects and materials. In this way, various formats, including digital, photographic and audiovisual archive materials can be presented. For graphics, Unifor has developed vertical drawers that display the objects when open. Pieces from the collection are presented in display cases. The 400 square metre space is located on the ground floor and is designed so that it can continue to grow. The centre is open to the public and visitors to the Milan institution as well as universities, foundations and public and private companies.

The new “Cuore” will essentially fulfil three functions: It will preserve the institution’s memory and make the Triennale’s heritage accessible through its archives, libraries, and collections, which include design, art, architecture, graphic design, photography, drawings, letters, and books. The reopening will make the Triennale Research Centre archive, originally established in 1935 and closed since 1990, available to the public again. In addition, innovative projects are to be developed to expand the institution’s expertise. And finally, with “Cuore”, the Triennale wants to strengthen its role as a platform for the promotion of design culture.
